Frequently asked questions

Choosing the right fireplace is not only a matter of aesthetics. The space, architecture, heating requirements, fuel type, chimney or flue, and the technical requirements of the installation should be considered as one complete system.

At Volcano, we approach each project as a whole, with the aim of integrating the fireplace naturally into the architecture while ensuring the quality, safety, reliability and performance expected from a professionally designed installation.

How do I choose the right fireplace for my space?

The right choice depends on the space, heating requirements, architectural design, intended use and preferred fuel type.

A fireplace should not be selected on appearance alone. Heat output, dimensions, installation position, chimney or flue requirements, and other technical parameters should be considered from the outset.

At Volcano, we assess these factors as part of the overall project and recommend the fireplace solution best suited to the space.

Ideally, as early as possible in the design process.

Early selection allows the fireplace position, chimney or flue, required services, ventilation, safety clearances and surrounding construction to be properly incorporated into the project.

When an architect or interior designer is involved, early coordination allows the technical requirements of the fireplace to be integrated with the architectural concept, reducing limitations and unnecessary changes later in the project.

Each technology responds to different requirements.

Wood fireplaces offer an authentic fire experience and strong heating performance. Gas fireplaces provide a real flame with instant operation and precise control. Bioethanol fireplaces provide a real flame with considerable architectural flexibility and no need for a traditional chimney. Electric fireplaces offer exceptional installation flexibility and the visual experience of fire without combustion.

The right choice depends on the space, intended use and technical possibilities of each project.

A high-efficiency wood fireplace is a closed combustion system designed to provide significantly better efficiency and greater control over combustion than a traditional open fireplace.

Controlled air supply, a sealed firebox and suitable heat-resistant materials allow the energy contained in the wood to be used more effectively.

Correct heat-output selection is essential so that the fireplace is properly matched to the actual requirements of the space.

In some cases, yes. This depends on the fireplace output, floor area and volume, insulation, ceiling height, layout and local climatic conditions.

For this reason, a fireplace should not be sized on floor area alone. The actual conditions of the project need to be assessed in order to select the appropriate output and, where applicable, the correct method of distributing heat.

No.

Wood-burning fireplaces require a correctly designed flue system. Gas fireplaces have specific flue and installation requirements depending on the appliance and system.

By contrast, certain bioethanol fireplaces and electric fireplaces do not require a traditional chimney. Every installation must follow the technical requirements of the specific product and the conditions of the project.

Yes. Modern bioethanol fireplaces can provide a real flame without a traditional chimney.

For example, BEV® technology burns ethanol vapours through an automated system with integrated safety sensors.

This provides considerable freedom for architectural integration, particularly where a conventional chimney is not possible. Installation must always comply with the manufacturer’s requirements.

Requirements vary according to the technology and the specific appliance.

They may include the chimney or flue system, combustion-air supply, clearances from combustible materials, insulation, electrical or other services, and the construction surrounding the fireplace.

Installation must follow the manufacturer’s technical requirements and be carried out by appropriately trained professionals. At Volcano, technical planning forms part of the project from fireplace selection through to final checks, commissioning and first ignition.

The chimney is a fundamental part of the safe and correct operation of a wood-burning fireplace.

Its diameter, height, route, insulation and termination all influence draught and therefore combustion performance.

An incorrectly designed or poorly maintained chimney can lead to operational problems, reduced performance or smoke entering the room.

Smoke entering the room can result from several factors, including insufficient draught, incorrect chimney sizing or construction, deposits or obstructions in the flue, or insufficient combustion air.

In modern, highly airtight homes, ventilation systems or powerful extractor fans can also affect pressure within the building.

If smoke spillage occurs repeatedly, the fireplace and flue system should be professionally inspected.

Some deposits are normal, but rapid or heavy blackening can be associated with damp wood, low combustion temperatures, insufficient air supply, poor draught or incorrect operation.

Using properly seasoned firewood and operating the fireplace in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions contributes significantly to cleaner combustion and cleaner glass.

Use suitable, properly seasoned firewood.

Burning damp wood reduces efficiency, increases smoke and contributes to greater deposits within the fireplace and chimney.

Painted or treated timber, MDF, chipboard and other materials not intended for use as fireplace fuel should never be burned.

As a general rule, we recommend professional inspection and cleaning at least once a year, depending on the appliance and how frequently it is used.

Regular maintenance removes soot, creosote and other deposits that can affect draught, performance and safety.

The period following the end of winter is particularly suitable for annual chimney cleaning and inspection.

Service intervals depend on the type of fireplace, its use and the manufacturer’s instructions.

Wood-burning fireplaces require regular inspection of the firebox, chimney, seals and relevant components. Gas fireplaces should likewise be inspected and serviced in accordance with the manufacturer’s requirements by an appropriately qualified technician.

Preventive maintenance supports safe operation, consistent performance and a longer service life.

Yes — and this is a central part of our approach.

Depending on the model and its technical requirements, a fireplace can form part of a complete architectural composition using different dimensions, materials, finishes and configurations.

Design freedom must always remain within the technical and construction requirements of the specific system. For this reason, we work with homeowners, architects and designers from the early stages of a project so that the final result combines architecture, functionality and safety.

In many cases, a purpose-designed fireplace cassette or insert can be installed within an existing open fireplace, significantly improving combustion control and energy efficiency.

Before selecting the appropriate insert, the available dimensions, existing chimney and overall condition of the fireplace must be assessed.

The final solution should be determined following a technical evaluation of the existing installation.

The total cost depends on the type and model of fireplace, its dimensions and technology, the chimney, flue or service requirements, and the complexity of the installation and surrounding construction.

For this reason, there is no single price that accurately represents every project. At Volcano, we assess the requirements and technical conditions of the space and prepare a complete proposal, so the client understands from the outset the recommended solution and its corresponding cost.

Every project has different architectural and technical requirements. The Volcano team can guide you from fireplace selection and design through installation, first ignition and ongoing technical support.
